One of a series of paintings that celebrate the Gitans of the Languedoc, Carmargue horsemen and women who drive their black bulls through the countryside from village to village. At each stop they allow the bulls to rampage through the village, and then round them up, showing off their horsemanship and valour. Villagers climb vantage points to see. The more foolhardy chase the bulls. The Gitanes ride their white horses, dressed in black trousers, white shirts and black hats and present an image of movement and excitement
